2007 Season - Week 6
Return of the Verde
With Jake Delhomme placed on injured reserve and David Carr ailing with a back injury, the Panthers turned to 43 year old Vinny Testaverde and after just 4 days with Carolina Vinny started last Sunday’s game at NFC West leading Arizona. He didn’t throw an interception and with 5minutes left he threw a 65 yard TD pass to Steve Smith leading Carolina to a 25-10 victory, becoming the oldest NFL Quarterback to win a game. He also extended his record of having thrown a TD pass in an incredible 21 consecutive seasons. By comparison Brett Favre has thrown a TD in 16.
Return of the Verde (Part 2)
That’s Verde as in Italian for Green and that’s Green as in Green Bay. The Packers moved to 5-1 this week and Brett Favre has set 2 NFL records recently which we should acknowledge. This week against Washington he passed George Blanda for the most Interceptions thrown in NFL history. He now has 279 two more than Hall of Famer Blanda who played QB and kicker for Chicago, Houston & Oakland from 1949 to 1975. More happily for Brett his first TD pass against Minnesota three weeks ago raised his total to 421 as he passed Dan Marino as the NFL’s all-time leader in career touchdown passes. He currently has 423. Congratulations to Mr Favre.
Trading Deadline
Two trades that may have an impact on BUMS Trading Day 2 have happened just prior to the NFL Trade Deadline. Miami sent former BUMS wideout Chris Chambers to San Diego for a 2008 second round pick and Tampa Bay strengthened their injury hit running back corps by trading for Chief and former Viking rusher Michael Bennett. The interesting thing about the Bennett trade is that it opens a roster spot for the 2002 and 2003 BUMS Player of the Year Priest Holmes who hasn’t played since October 2005. Holmes won the Papas Fritas trophy as part of Chief’s 2002 squad
BUMS on Seats.
We are at HQ on Sunday from 6pm for the Sky doubleheader as Tampa Bay travel to Detroit followed by the AFC West battle as Kansas City travel to Oakland. Will we get a Priest sighting? The alternative games are New England @ Miami and Chicago @ Philadelphia. The Sunday night game is Pittsburgh @ Denver and Monday it’s Indianapolis @ Jacksonville. Venues to be confirmed. As always all are welcome.
